Rooster’s Story
In mid-October 2024, two of our volunteers went to a local shelter to hand out treats to all the dogs currently living there. As they made their way through the rows of kennels, they came upon a pop-up kennel in the corner with the sweetest little pittie boy in it. He looked up at the volunteers with the sweetest, yet most defeated eyes. He was extremely malnourished and had open wounds on his ears. Despite this, he gave them kisses through the bars and accepted treats ever so gently.
The shelter staff said he was brought in earlier that day and that the vet believed that all of his wounds were dog bites in various stages of healing. While we primarily rescue pups directly from the streets, our volunteers could not leave this sweet boy behind. The following day they visited him with burgers and spent time sitting with him in the sun. He just sat, resting his head on her lap, for as long as she would allow it. When no owner came forward for him, we transferred him to our vet to begin his medical treatment.
This sweet boy is 3 years old, 51 lbs, and heartworm-positive, and our vet thinks his ears are exceptionally bad due to flies chewing on the open wounds. Despite everything he’s been through, he is still the sweetest and gentlest little man. We have decided to name him Rooster, as roosters symbolize the start of a new day. We have promised Rooster that this new life will be drastically different from his old one. We have promised him healing and unconditional love.
Rooster is still learning to receive love and to be more comfortable around people, but he is the sweetest guy and a total ham! Scroll to see some before and after pictures to see how far this guy has come!
